Lenmed Group’s transplant and LVAD (left ventricular assist device) programme at Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre represents a significant milestone in advancing healthcare services for the region.
This is all in line with Lenmed Group’s ambition to create world class centres of excellence and has embarked upon numerous other accreditation exercises in the fields of stroke, trauma and bariatric surgery – in this regard, Lenmed Group has to date received Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa (COHSASA), Trauma Society of South Africa (TSSA) and Bariatric Surgery accreditations at various of its hospital facilities.
We are committed to expanding access to life-saving organ transplant and device implant procedures, including kidney and future planned liver transplants. Our programmes adhere to stringent protocols and ethical standards, ensuring patient safety and long-term success post-transplant and implant.
The first living donor renal transplant was performed in April 2025 with additional workups being performed for future LRD (living related donor) and cadaver donor renal transplants. A kidney transplant offers patients a second chance at life. It can be performed using a living donor, who is known to the recipient, or a cadaver donor. Patients are typically referred by their nephrologist, after which a potential live donor undergoes a comprehensive compatibility and eligibility assessment. This process includes a meticulous 12-step medical workup to ensure the highest standards of safety and success for both donor and recipient.
Following the surgery, patients undergo long-term post-operative monitoring and care, as ongoing evaluation is essential to ensure the health of both donor and recipient.
