Our Commitment

We are committed to expanding access to life-saving organ transplant and device implant procedures, including kidney and future planned liver transplants. Our programmes adhere to stringent protocols and ethical standards, ensuring patient safety and long-term success post-transplant and implant.

Our Impact

The first living donor renal transplant was performed in April 2025 with additional workups being performed for future LRD (living related donor) and cadaver donor renal transplants. Through continuous improvement and innovation, we aim to positively impact the lives of patients in need of organ transplantation

Our Testament

Lenmed’s kidney transplant programme stands as a testament to our commitment to clinical excellence, innovation, and the continuum of care,  giving our patients not just treatment, but the gift of renewed life and possibility.

Kidney Transplant Journey

At Lenmed, we believe in transforming lives through advanced, compassionate, and life-saving care – and our kidney transplant program is a true reflection of that purpose.

A kidney transplant offers patients a second chance at life. It can be performed using a living donor, who is known to the recipient, or a cadaver donor. Patients are typically referred by their nephrologist, after which a potential live donor undergoes a comprehensive compatibility and eligibility assessment. This process includes a meticulous 12-step medical workup to ensure the highest standards of safety and success for both donor and recipient.

If a living donor is not compatible or eligible, the patient is then placed on the national waiting list for a suitable cadaver donor.

Following the surgery, patients undergo long-term post-operative monitoring and care, as ongoing evaluation is essential to ensure the health of both donor and recipient.

The transplant itself is a highly coordinated and precise procedure. The renal surgical team is composed of two surgeons dedicated to the donor, two surgeons for the recipient, and a lead surgeon overseeing both procedures. Each surgical team is supported by expert scrub nurses and anaesthetic specialists, ensuring seamless collaboration and uncompromising care throughout the operation.

What makes Lenmed truly unique is that we are among the few private healthcare groups in South Africa to offer both adult and paediatric kidney transplantation. This means that from the smallest children to the most complex adult cases, our multidisciplinary teams are equipped to deliver specialised care, offering hope where it is needed most.
